From Scroll to Soul: Embracing Scripture Before Screens

One of the best decisions I made recently is to start reading the Bible as soon as I wake up. His word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105) for the day ahead.

It’s human nature for most people to immediately grab their phone as soon as they open their eyes. They want to know what they missed out on while they were asleep. I used to do this as well. I would wake up and the first things I filled my mind with were breaking news updates, a friend complaining about how they don’t want to go to work, and businesses trying to sell me stuff. That’s not a good way to start the day for a Christian.

We should be starting the day with God. We should be looking towards the Word before we look towards the world.

Colossians 3:16 tells us to “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God”. We should be storing up His word in our hearts so we don’t sin against Him (Psalm 119:11).

Benefits of Reading the Bible in the Morning

1. Spiritual Nourishment: Reading the Bible in the morning provides you with spiritual nourishment to start your day. It allows you to connect with God and set the tone for the day ahead.

2. Guidance and Direction: The Bible is filled with wisdom and guidance for every aspect of life. By starting your day reading scripture, you can seek God’s guidance and direction for the challenges and decisions you may face.

3. Renewed Focus and Clarity: Reading the Bible helps to clear your mind of distractions and allows you to focus on what truly matters. It helps you gain clarity about your purpose and priorities, bringing a sense of peace and focus to your day.

4. Strength and Encouragement: The Bible is a source of strength and encouragement. Reading it in the morning can inspire and motivate you, giving you the strength to face the day’s difficulties, and reminding you of God’s promises.

5. Cultivating Faith and Gratitude: Regularly reading the Bible helps to deepen your faith and cultivate a heart of gratitude. It reminds you of God’s faithfulness throughout history and encourages you to be grateful for his blessings in your own life.

Remember, these are just a few reasons to consider reading the Bible first thing in the morning. The important thing is to find a time that works best for you and allows you to develop a consistent habit of spending time with God’s Word.
