Self-Discipline for the Win

If you want to be an author, you have to write like it’s your job. That can be difficult to do with no deadlines and guidelines. It’s up to you to make sure you write on a daily basis and schedule your time effectively if you ever want to finish that book.

Accountability partners are great, but only if you have a good system set up. To have a person ask you if you did all your writing every week is helpful, but what if you didn’t get all your writing done? What happens then?

The best way to ensure you are meeting your goals is to discipline yourself. You can use positive or negative reinforcement, but whatever you choose as your reinforcement, it has to have the same weight and importance as the task of writing.

If you want to write 5,000 words per week, then you need to have something on the line weekly that is just as important as you find your writing to be. If you want to be an author and get paid for your writing, then you have to treat it like a job, in which case, your reinforcement has to be as important as a job.

Discipline yourself.
