If you choose to go with a publishing company, most of them will help you with the marketing. However, the self-publishing phenomenon is in full force now. You can save a lot of money and make a lot of money going the self-publishing route, but that means you have to do all the marketing yourself.
Marketing is how you represent yourself to your buyers…or future buyers. It’s important to start marketing yourself as a writer before you’re published. Let people know what’s coming. Give them a taste of what it’s included. Draw them in so that when the product comes out they can’t wait to read it.
Start a website or blog that you can gather followers on and set up an email campaign. It could be a free product or a periodic email with valuable info. The people on that email list are your first potential buyers when you finally publish your work because you know they are already a fan of your work.
You can set up a website or blog for free or a very affordable price. You can also market yourself as a writer on social media. Create a Facebook page, Instagram and Twitter account, and even Snapchat for free. Websites that gear towards writers and readers are important too, like GoodReads.
Before you start your marketing campaigns though, make sure you know your target audience. Are you trying to attract readers of a specific genre? Then make sure marketing content will appeal to them.
Have you ever had to do a fundraiser at school? Or maybe join one of those tupperware or makeup businesses where you have to make a quota? Treat your marketing campaign just like that. I sell LimeLife makeup products on the side and I use social media constantly to market myself to gain more buyers. Your product before you publish your work is you and after you publish, your product is your book and you. Give yourself a quota for future buyers and current buyers and use your marketing tools to your advantage.
Below are some free and affordable ways to market yourself as a writer:
- Social Media
- YouTube Channel
- Word of Mouth
- Google Ads
- Freelance Writing
Start promoting yourself as a writer now and once you’re a published writer, you’ll already have a fan base. Get to work!
